Man accused of shooting man trying to steal car in uptown charged with murder

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police is investigating a homicide in the 300 block of West Trade Street Saturday morning.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man was charged with murder in a deadly carjacking that happened Saturday morning in the 300 block of West Trade Street in uptown, police say. 

Police report the murder suspect, 24-year-old Albert Washington, was arrested on Monday following a traffic stop on Dunden Street. During that traffic stop, police report they found cocaine in the vehicle. 

Washington has been charged with murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, possession of cocaine and possession of marijuana. 

The call of service came in at 2:15 a.m. Saturday morning, CMPD said. Officers responded to an armed robbery call for service where a male victim said that his vehicle was stolen at gunpoint. 

Officers said the victim told 911 the carjacking suspect, 20-year-old Brandon Christopher Clark, had not left the scene and was still sitting in the vehicle. He then told the operator Clark got out of the vehicle and was shot by Washington. 

When police arrived to the scene they located Clark lying in the parking lot with a gunshot wound. 

CMPD said in their initial investigation Clark got out of the vehicle he was trying to steal, which did not move from the parking lot, when he was shot by Washington. 

A female bystander sitting in another car in the same parking lot had her vehicle shot into, but police said she was not injured.

Officers said an apartment on 5th Street was also struck by a bullet, no one was injured there either.
