1-year-old shot in the leg, police say

The one-year-old boy is expected to be okay, according to CMPD. It's unclear what led up to the shooting.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A one-year-old boy was hurt in an overnight shooting in northeast Charlotte, police say.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, gunfire rang out at a home on the 700th block of Cricketwood Lane around 1:00 a.m. That's near Briarwood Park and The Plaza.

A police report obtained by WCNC Charlotte states the child was shot in the leg by an unknown suspect. It's unclear what led to the shooting at this time.

Speaking anonymously, people who live in the area said they heard one to two gun shots before police arrived.

"Disturbing hearing it," one neighbor said. "That's an innocent human being."

The little boy was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to CMPD. The department hasn't announced any arrests or released any suspect information, but believe the incident was isolated to the home. They are not looking for any other involved parties.

"I got a little girl myself and usually this neighborhood is pretty quiet," another neighbor said. "Put the guns down. Stop the violence."

The shooting comes on the heels of a violent first quarter for the city with overall crime up 3%.

"It just breaks your heart. We’re thinking about that family and that child who’s hopefully going to come out of this okay," Mitch Hyatt with Hyatt Coin and Gun Shop said.

While the exact circumstances of Tuesday's shooting remain unclear, Hyatt said there are some steps gun owners can take to keep children safe.

"If you own a gun make sure that when you’re not using it it’s locked up and secure," Hyatt said. "There’s a variety of products out there. Everything from free to $100 that you can do everything you need and have it available when need it, but locked up when you don’t.”

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information about this shooting or any other incident is asked to call Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
