Bags of stolen mail found in Union County man's home, officials say

Detectives in Union County are still sifting through mail trying to identify all the victims in the most recent case.

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A man is behind bars and facing more than 50 charges after police say he stole several bags of mail and a car.

Investigators searched 25-year-old Cody Walden's home and discovered tax documents, bank statements and other financial records from various people. In addition, detectives located handwritten notes listing social security numbers.

Detectives in Union County are still sifting through mail trying to identify all the victims in the most recent case.

"It's very frustrating because you don't know what you're missing," a woman said.

In recent months mail theft has plagued several neighborhoods.

"There's been a lot of people commenting saying, 'Hey I've had mail taken out of my mailbox today just wanted to keep you all aware of it'," Lauren Spiers said.

Mail crooks are even targeting post offices.

Last month, the Mint Hill USPS moved it's drop-off box closer to their facility because of brazen mail burglars.

"It's our mail, it's personal belongings, it's personal information, and knowing anyone can just access it and take it is kind of a little disturbing, a little unsettling," Spiers said.

"You don't want to have to worry about your mail or personal information being pulled from right up under your nose," Shaneil Williams said.
