CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — The Catawba County Sheriff's Office says a man is in custody after they found a woman dead inside a home Saturday.
On Sunday, the sheriff's office identified the suspect in the homicide investigation as 47-year-old Wilbern Carlos Springs.
Deputies were called to a home on Deal Road, north of the Claremont community, and encountered a man armed with a gun. The sheriff's office said he retreated back inside when they approached him.
Deputies were able to confirm that a relative of the man told him someone inside the home was dead, and the county's Special Tactics and Response (STAR) Team immediately made entry into the home.
Deputies inside found the woman dead, and the man they encountered was also injured. He was treated at a local hospital.
The sheriff's office identified the woman on Sunday as 45-year-old Yolanda Burrell. Her next of kin have been notified.
Burrell and Springs were reportedly living in the same home on Deal Rd. at the time of Burrell's Death.
Springs is being held with no bond. His first court appearance is on Monday.
Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.
WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
