CMPD releases body camera video of deadly Tremont Avenue shooting

A person was shot and killed after stabbing a CMPD officer in the neck.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department released police-worn body camera videos Thursday showing officers shooting and killing a man in August.

CMPD officers were responding to a domestic violence call when they heard gunshots from inside the apartment building on Tremont Avenue.

The officers forced their way inside the apartment and found a man with a gun.

The videos released Thursday confirm information released by police in August.

Officers struggled to take the suspect into custody when the man stabbed one of the officers in the back of the neck with a knife. At that point, another officer shot and killed the man, who was pronounced dead on the scene.

The injured officer and another woman, who had been shot, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

CMPD identified the officers involved as Tyler Bourque and Shawn McMichael.

“We routinely train for situations like this involving active violence," Johnny Jennings, the CMPD police chief, said in a released statement Thursday. "Officers Bourque and McMichael rose to their training, putting their lives in extreme danger for the sake of the protection of innocent life. Police officers are never able to predict the circumstances that they are about to encounter. This case highlights the dangers they face and how quickly a threat can present itself."

McMichael, the officer who had been stabbed in the head, was able to fully recover from his serious injury, Jennings said.

WCNC Charlotte decided Thursday not to broadcast the graphic videos, which aligned with information previously released by police and stemmed from an isolated, domestic incident that did not pose a risk to the general public. CMPD has made the videos available for public viewing on their YouTube channel.
