'This has got to stop': Family of deadly carjacking victim calls for end to 'senseless' violence

Officers responded along Fontana Avenue, near Burton Street, where they found a man with gunshot wounds.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man was shot and killed during an alleged carjacking in north Charlotte early Thursday, police said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded to a reported shooting a little after 1 a.m. along Fontana Avenue, near the intersection with Burton Street. When officers arrived, they found 37-year-old Craig Zonta Tobias suffering from a gunshot wound. Tobias was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

A police report obtained by WCNC Charlotte states the shooter stole Tobias' Ford pickup truck. CMPD hasn't released any suspect information at this time or announced any arrests. Meanwhile, family members are praying for justice for their loved one.

"[Tobias] had his own business, took care of himself, took care of his kids. He didn't deserve this," Craig Bowman, the victim's father, said. "I don't know what happened, but it'll still get handed one way or another. Justice will be done."

Another family member told WCNC Charlotte that Tobias was killed right outside his grandmother's house. The man said it was shocking to hear that he'd been targeted.

"That's even more shocking," one family member said. "Your grandmother's house, you'd expect there to be some kind of respect ... As far as I know he's not in the street or anything like that, so that's the shocker to me. It's senseless violence and it's got to stop."
