GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro Police say they arrested a man for a reported carjacking thanks to GPS technology.
It happened around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the 2400 block of Battleground Avenue, right in the busy parking lot of the shopping center with the Omega Sports store.
According to a report, the victim, Jamie Davis told police a man stole her car at gunpoint and took off going west on Oakcrest Drive.
"I was starting to open my door when he comes and just shoved it open," said Davis.
"In my face, he was like right here with a gun to my head and he was like move over you’re going with me and I just started kicking and punching him," added Davis as she demonstrated what happened.
"I reckon he finally saw that I wasn’t going to go easy so I managed to push my way out. When I pushed my way out I fell on the ground and he hopped in and I took off running," she said.
Davis said she ran into the Cta Clinic vet office and told them to lock the door and call 911.
"When the officers got there I told them I had OnStar, it was active, I gave them all my login information and we had tried to track my phone but he had thrown it on to the interstate," she said.
Police say they used the embedded OnStar GPS technology in the vehicle to track the suspect. The vehicle was located in the East Market Street corridor.
Officers worked with OnStar to disable the car and detain the suspect on Murrow Blvd.
Davis says without the technology in her car, who knows if the suspect would have been caught.
"If it wouldn't have been for the OnStar it would have been like looking for a needle in a haystack."
The driver of the stolen vehicle, Eddie Garcia-Ortega, 42, faces several charges including robbery with a dangerous weapon and 2nd-degree kidnapping. He was placed in the Guilford County Jail.
