Officer's foot run over after traffic stop turns into chase, police say

MINT HILL, N.C. — An officer's foot was run over during a traffic stop that turned into a chase in Mint Hill early Monday morning, police said.

The incident started on Blair Rd. near I-485 around 3:45 a.m. The officer pulled over a driver for having a fake license plate, police said.

The officer said as he approached the car, the driver had his right hand between the seat and center console and was startled when the officer knocked on the passenger side window to ask for his documents. 

When the officer asked the driver to roll down his window, the suspect took off and ran over the officer's foot, police said. The officer returned to his cruiser and followed the suspect, who later crashed his vehicle in the 5200 block of Camp Stewart Rd., according to officials.

Elias Phillip Francis was taken to the hospital then jail. A search of his vehicle revealed a stolen gun and some Xanax, police said.

Francis was charged with felony flee to elude, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a firearm by felon, possession of schedule IV controlled substance (Xanax), assault on a government official, and carrying a concealed weapon.
