Teen charged with firing shots at south Charlotte school bus stop

One student said he was playing on his phone waiting for the bus when the suspect pointed a gun at his face.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An 18-year-old is facing charges after police alleged he fired multiple shots toward students at a south Charlotte school bus stop in late March.

The shooting happened around 7 a.m. on March 28 along Royal Point Drive near Arrowood Road, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police. The students were waiting on a bus for Palisades High School. One of the students told police that he was playing on his phone when he looked up and saw a gun being pointed at his face by Elijah Massey. The student said he walked away and began to run when he heard gunshots.

Another student told police he thought the incident was over a girl who was reportedly dating Massey. Detectives later identified Massey and the gun used during the shooting in an Instagram post, according to CMPD.

Massey was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, possession of a firearm by a felon and assault by pointing a gun in connection with the incident. Massey was 17 at the time of the shooting, detectives said. He was previously convicted of assault with a deadly weapon in February.

Massey is scheduled to appear in court on April 30.

Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.

WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
