YORK COUNTY, S.C. -- An arrest warrant claims Steven Tyler Benfield stabbed and cut Jessica Stewart to death. Authorities found her body near a home in Blacksburg Monday.
NBC Charlotte spoke to a neighbor who says he heard the two arguing before authorities showed up.
Frankie Faris of Blacksburg says Benfield has a troubled past and court records confirm that: showing more than 30 charges dating back to 2002.
"They kept on fussing and arguing, and I didn't want to go over there and get involved in it," said Faris.
Faris believes he may have heard Steven Benfield and Jessica Stewart arguing just minutes before she was killed.
"It wasn't 15 minutes until the rescue squad came in," said Faris.
Forensic investigators spent Tuesday at 14088 W. Highway 55 in Blacksburg.
An arrest warrant states 30-year-old Jessica Pitman Stewart was stabbed and cut to death by Steven Tyler Benfield. Stewart's body was discovered by investigators in the backyard. Deputies arrested Benfield on murder charges.
Faris says Benfield has caused trouble for many years.
"I hate to see anybody locked up, but as much trouble as he's been in he needs punished for it," said Faris.
This is the fifth homicide in York County so far this year.
