Man turns self in after deadly shooting, Watauga County deputies report

He turned himself in after telling emergency communicators he shot another man Thursday night.

WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. — The Watauga County Sheriff's Office says a Boone man turned himself in after reportedly telling 911 communicators he shot and killed another man Thursday night.

Deputies say 25-year-old Alexander Matthew Jackson told emergency operators he had shot and killed 38-year-old Michael Ross, who lived in the Elk Park community in Avery County. Jackson reportedly said he did this at his home along NC Highway 194 North, which is north of Boone.

Jackson was taken into custody and is now charged with first-degree murder. He remains held in jail with no bond.

"We are deeply troubled by the events that transpired last night," said Sheriff Len Hagaman in a statement. "Our thoughts are with the victim and their loved ones during this difficult time. We are committed to ensuring that justice is served and will continue to work diligently on this case."

The sheriff's office has promised to share more information about the charges and legal proceedings as the investigation continues. Anyone who has information on the shooting is asked to speak with deputies by calling (828) 264-3761.
