FBI, CMPD investigating security incident at Charlotte Douglas International Airport

According to the police report, the flight crew reported suspicious writing on the screen of an in-seat display.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Officials are investigating after reports of a potential security incident on board a JetBlue flight at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.

According to the police report, the flight crew reported suspicious writing on the screen of an in-seat display.

“JetBlue flight 218 scheduled to depart from Charlotte to New York this morning has been delayed for additional security screenings out of an abundance of caution. Local law enforcement is on site and we are working to get customers on their way to New York as soon as possible", stated JetBlue officials.

Charlotte FBI responded to Charlotte-Douglas along with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department after the reported security concern.

"A variety of steps were taken out of an abundance of caution including deplaning passengers and rescreening them, along with a thorough search of the JetBlue plane, which was leaving Charlotte for JFK," a statement from Charlotte FBI reads. "At this time, there are no indications there was a threat to public safety."

The flight took off later Sunday afternoon, hours after its scheduled time.

Bobby Thompson says he was at the airport overlook to watch planes take off with his grandson at the time.

“We just came up to watch the planes, my grandson loved watching them,” Thompson said.

They saw emergency lights and noticed things weren't like normal.

“We noticed the air wasn’t as busy as it usually it is and when we got here there was nothing coming in or taking off,” Thompson said.

But then once the emergency lights stopped, they figured the security incident had been resolved.

“We figured once all the lights quit down there, the planes started coming out, so we figured the incident was over with,” Thompson said.
