CMPD deputy chief named as new police chief

"I want to be known as the best police chief this department has ever seen," Deputy Chief Johnny Jennings said.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte City Manager announced Charlotte's new police chief Wednesday morning.

"I'm very happy and excited to announce that Deputy Chief Johnny Jennings will be the next police chief for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department," City Manager Marcus D. Jones announced.

Jennings joined the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in 1992.

"If you were to ask me five years ago or tell me five years ago that I'd be standing here and not announcing my retirement, but announcing, being introduced as the next Charlotte-Mecklenburg police chief I would have said that I wouldn't believe you," Jennings said.

He went on to say that during a conversation with Jones, he was asked what he wants to be known for in the police department.

"Without hesitation I said, 'I want to be known as the best police chief this department has ever seen,'" Jennings said.

Jennings will start his new role as chief in September.  Chief Kerr Putney will lead the department through the RNC in August in Charlotte.
