How to see the Super Blood Wolf Moon eclipse: 5 things to know Friday, January 18

The U.S. will be treated to a beautiful total lunar eclipse, school lunches in one North Carolina district are feeling the brunt of the government shutdown and Krispy Kreme has a super sweet deal for doughnut lovers.

1. What is the Super Blood Wolf Moon Eclipse and how do I see it?

With a name like the "Super Blood Wolf Moon Eclipse," you might expect the upcoming celestial event to accompany the end of the world.

The short answer: It (probably) won't be.

The "super" part of the name comes from the fact that the moon will be at its closest point to earth in its orbit, meaning it should be about 30 percent brighter and 14 percent bigger. But no, don't expect this to cause the Earth's only natural satellite to come crashing down.

"Blood" simply refers to reddish color the moon will take when the Earth passes between it and the sun. It's caused by the Earth's atmosphere. What little light reaches the moon will be filtered out and make the moon take on an eerie scarlet hue. And the "wolf" part? It just refers to the fact that it's a full moon in January when wolves howled with mid-winter hunger.

Expect to start seeing the eclipse begin around 10:33 p.m. on Sunday. The total eclipse will begin at 11:41 p.m. and reach totality at 12:12 a.m. From there, it remains a total lunar eclipse until 12:43 a.m. and moves back out to a partial eclipse by 1:50 a.m.

2. Manhunt underway for escaped inmate in Alexander County

Officials said Jason Mullen of Statesville escaped while taking out the trash.

He was expected in court next week on charges related to meth, larceny of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Mullen may be driving a stolen, gray 1987 Dodge truck with a camper top. Anyone with information related to Mullen's whereabouts should call (828) 632-1111.

3. Dan McCready accuses Mark Harris of "stealing votes" in 9th District

In a one-on-one interview with NBC Charlotte's Rad Berky, Democrat Dan McCready accused Republican Mark Harris and his campaign of stealing votes.

Harris was the apparent winner of North Carolina's 9th District race last November, but the results were never certified because of allegations of absentee ballot tampering.

“We will never know how many votes his campaign stole," McCready said of Harris.

Harris is asking a court judge to declare him the winner. A hearing is scheduled for next Tuesday.

4. School lunches shrinking at 1 NC school district due to the shutdown

The shutdown sent several federal agencies scrambling for cash, and school leaders in Vance County said it left them no choice but to conserve food and funding. In a post on the district's Facebook page, Vance County administrators said school lunches will be reduced to what they call minimum level starting the week of January 21.

What is a minimum level lunch? It means students will receive one main dish, such as a sandwich, a piece of bread, two vegetables and milk. Students will no longer be given the option of bottle juice or water. Only elementary schools will receive fresh produce as part of a separate program, which is being reduced to just two days during the shutdown.
