Birdsong Brewing plant brews with Mother Nature in mind

Birdsong Brewing Co. is working to lessen its carbon footprint while serving up the same tasty beer their customers have known to expect.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte brewery is working to lessen its carbon footprint while serving up tasty brews to customers.

Birdsong Brewing Co. is a Queen City staple, and while the process of turning grain into delicious beer remains pretty much the same, you'll need a bird's eye view to see exactly what's powering the brewery.

The brewery is taking sustainability seriously with a vast array featuring 220 solar panels on the company's roof. Chris Goulet, one of Bridsong's co-founders, said it's all about making the most out of their 12,000 feet of production space while helping the planet, which has been a part of their mission from the start.

"We produce our own electricity with our solar panel array on our roof," Goulet said. "It's something that's been a part of the Birdsong culture from the beginning, so why wouldn't we?"

Instead of relying on carbon dioxide to ferment the beer, Birdsong produces its own nitrogen. Goulet said the green thinking has tapped into other places, leading something of a clean-energy revolution for the industry.

"We helped advise four or five other breweries how to put in a nitrogen generator," Goulet said.
