2 kids killed in Denver house fire, officials say

The fire happened at a home on Grassy Creek Road near the Lincoln County line, officials said.

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — Two children are dead after a house fire in Denver Sunday night, officials said.

Multiple crews responded to a fire at a house on Grassy Creek Road, near the Lincoln and Catawba county lines, Sunday night. Catawba County officials confirmed both children were under the age of 18.

Neighbors told WCNC Charlotte that it only took a few seconds to know something was wrong.

“Fire departments just all over,” neighbor Mitchell Sigmon said. “Somebody yelling, get my children out of there."

“It’s just horrible, I mean really it is, just the thoughts of children in the house, and they can’t get out, it’s more than I really want to think about," neighbor Linda Sigmon said.

The fire was accidental due to an electrical issue, according to the Catawba County officials.

'It’s just really sad, we hope the family is taken care of," Sigmon said.

While officials did not name the children, a GoFundMe set up by a family member identified the victims as sisters: 6-year-old Kaleigh Rumfelt and 4-year-old Khole Rumfelt.
