Classes canceled at a Lancaster Co. middle school Monday due to fire

The Lancaster County middle school will be closed for the second day in a row due to the damages caused by a fire that broke out Thursday night.

LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. -- A Lancaster County middle school will be closed for the second day in a row due to a fire that broke out Thursday night.

School officials say Andrew Jackson Middle School will be closed Monday, March 5. As classes are expected to resume Tuesday, the sixth graders in the middle school will be heading to Heath Springs Elementary School, seventh-grade students will be assigned to report to Kershaw Elementary School and eighth graders will report to Andrew Jackson High School.

The changes in the campus assignments will last through the entire week as crews work to clean the damages caused by Thursday night's fire, said Lancaster County Jonathan Phipps in a statement.

"We want to be sure all the soot is cleaned from every area of the building and that the building is completely safe for students and staff before we resume classes there,” Phipps said in a statement.

Phipps said in the statement the fire was small and contained to the janitor’s closet. He thanked the local firefighters for the prompt response to the fire.

The damage caused by the fire is estimated between $700,000 to $1 million.

Those interested in donating school supplies can bring them to the school district's office at 300 South Catawba Street in Lancaster.
