How to get ahead of rising baggage fees on your next flight

Bag fees are more expensive than ever, and many passengers feel blindsided by the sudden change.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Baggage fees are on the rise for just about every major airline, and if you want to avoid paying big money, you'll want to plan ahead.

Bags are more expensive than ever, based on new trends across the airline industry. The sudden change leaves many travelers feeling blindsided.

Checking a bag will cost passengers at least $35 on pretty much every major airline, with a second bag costing around $45. Some budget airlines are even charging passengers for carry-on luggage.

These extra bag fees are the latest in a series of new costs as airlines unbundle different elements. Most folks no longer get meals on flights, must pay extra for their seats and are shelling out even more to get a particular seat on the plane.

Airlines argue it allows travelers to pick what they want to pay for, but critics argue the extra fees just surprise people when they buy tickets.

The best workaround is to pay for your bags early. Experts say passengers who wait are more likely to pay more than those who go ahead and pay the bag fee. Travelers should also check their status since most airlines waive bag fees for frequent fliers.
