Winter weather causes crashes, road closures in NC mountains

Motorists were asked to avoid the area as crews worked to clear the roads.

BEECH MOUNTAIN, N.C. — A blast of winter weather led to multiple crashes and road closures across Avery and Watauga counties Monday.

The Beech Mountain Police Department advised residents to avoid Beech Mountain Parkway after multiple crashes were reported. Police and officials with the North Carolina Department of Transportation worked to plow and salt the roadways to make them accessible for motorists. It's unclear how many crashes happened during this incident or if there were any injuries.

Multiple highways in Avery and Watauga counties were closed or dealt with bad traffic conditions, according to Drive NC. As of Tuesday morning, Beech Mountain Parkway was back open.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is closed Tuesday due to the adverse weather conditions, with park officials noting park roads were covered with ice and snow, making the drive around there quite treacherous.
