Department of Justice releases mobile app to track sex offenders

The North Carolina Department of Justice has lanuched a new application that allows people to search for registered sex offenders across North Carolina.

RALIEGH, N.C. -- The North Carolina Department of Justice has launched a new application that allows people to search for registered sex offenders across North Carolina.

Attorney General Roy Cooper unveiled a new tool to help the public track registered sex offenders. The North Carolina Sex Offender Registry is now available on a mobile app, and it allows users to track all of the state's 14,000 sex offenders.

Users can download the free app, and search by any North Carolina address. The app will also use the phone's GPS capability to perform searches based on the user's current location.

This is just another tool that families can use to protect their children and their families, said Cooper.

We know that people have become much more mobile, and they have a high expectation that the same information they can get at home or the office ought to be available in the palm of their hand. That's what this app does, he said.

The new app also allows users to look at offenders' mug shots, and list of offenses. There is even the ability to sign up for email alerts for up to five offenders.

Right now, the app is only available for Apple devices. An Android version is expected out in the next few months. To download, serach for NC sex offender registry in the app store.
