Five things you need to know Thursday, April 26

1. Finally, Shake Shack is opening today in Charlotte

The big day is finally here.

No, not the NFL Draft. Shake Shack, one of New York’s most iconic burger spots, is making its debut in the Queen City.

With their famous burgers, crinkle-cut fries, milkshakes and, of course, the ShackSauce, there’s no question the buzz surrounding Shake Shack has been building since it was announced the restaurant was coming to Charlotte.

The new restaurant, which is located in the Park Road Shopping Center, officially opens its doors at 11 a.m. Thursday, but if you want to be one of the first in line, you’ll need to get there a lot sooner. The first 100 people inside will get some free swag courtesy of Shake Shack. Click here to learn more about the highly anticipated grand opening.

2. Coast Guard suspends search for 4-year-old swept into water along Outer Banks

The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended it's search for a 4-year-old boy after he was pulled into the water Wednesday afternoon.

Crews were searching the waters off Lillian Street in Kitty Hawk. The Coast Guard launched a Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City, and a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat from Station Oregon Inlet to search for the boy around 4 p.m.

"Suspending a search for anyone, let alone a young child, is the most difficult thing a commanding officer in the Coast Guard is called upon to do," said Capt. Bion Stewart, commander, Sector North Carolina. "I can't imagine what the family of this little boy is going through right now." Click here to continue reading.

3. Almost half of Charlotte's murder suspects this year are teens

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said despite the fact that homicides are down in the city compared to the same time last year, they were concerned about the number of teens involved in some of those murders.

"One homicide is one too many," said Robert Tufano, CMPD Spokesperson.

At this time last year, the department was dealing with 28 homicides. This year, police have responded to 16. In several of those cases, teens have been arrested and charged with murder, including at least three juveniles under the age of 16. 4. The Panthers have the 24th pick tonight in the first round of the NFL Draft

When NFL teams like the Carolina Panthers get to draft night, they've exhausted all resources and research.

They've spent months identifying hundreds of possible selections, interviewing them, hosting them on visits, vetting them, and investigating some of them to create massive and complex war room boards.

NBC Charlotte Sports Director Nick Carboni spent some time with Panthers.com writer Bill Voth, asking him who he thinks the Panthers may consider with their pick Thursday night. Spoiler alert: Bill doesn't know! But he did predict the Panthers would make at least one trade during the draft...

The first round will air live at 8 p.m. on numerous networks, including Fox, NFL Network, ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN Deported. Troy Aikman, Fox's lead NFL analyst, will join Rich Eisen and Mike Mayock of the NFL Network for Thursday night's coverage.

5. Doctors thought it was the flu. But a disease from mouse droppings killed her.

A 27-year-old mom has died of a rodent-borne disease called hantavirus, about three months after she first showed symptoms.

Doctors at first thought that Kiley Lane of Aztec, N.M., had the flu, said Lane's mother, Julie Barron of Lubbock, Texas. Lane went Jan. 13 to San Juan Regional Medical Center for a diagnosis and was released the same day.

“Our family doesn’t really go to the doctor a lot. But in this particular case, her husband just had the gut instinct that they didn’t need to wait around, and he took her into the ER,” Barron told People magazine. Lane also has a 2-year-old daughter. Click here to continue reading.
