GASTONIA, N.C. — A Gastonia woman has pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining business loans meant for COVID-19 relief, only to use those funds for her own personal expenses.
The U.S. District Attorney's Office in Charlotte announced this week that 48-year-old Kelly Bree Mosley admitted in court to using roughly $125,000 of PPP and EIDL loans for things like bills, foreign currency investments, and even plastic surgery that included liposuction. She obtained the loans by submitting applications for a fake event planning business and in her own name.
The application included falsified details like gross revenues, payroll expenses, number of employees, and operational costs. When she submitted her applications, Mosley certified under the penalty of perjury that the information was real.
Prosecutors say she pleaded guilty to wire fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison. Mosley is out on bond for now and awaiting sentencing at a later date.
