Homeowner concerned with gun range after close call

North Carolina's largest public target shooting complex is on track to reopen one of its ranges after a homeowner nearby complained bullets were whizzing over his head.

CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. -- North Carolina's largest public target shooting complex is on track to reopen one of its ranges after a homeowner nearby complained bullets were whizzing over his head.

The Foothills Public Shooting Complex of Cleveland County has multiple ranges, including Range One, which is a little more than two-thousand feet from Michael Dellinger's home.

"Bullets were coming right through this area right here and hitting the woods up there," he said.

No rounds have hit him or his home.

Foothills director Sam Lockridge said state wildlife engineers discovered bullets were possibly ricocheting off the ground at Range One, over the back berm toward Dellinger's house.

Both Range One and range two next-door were shut down out of precaution.

"We've done and are doing everything we can to make that a safe range," Lockridge said.

Engineers already placed wooden barriers on the ground and will install more armored-plated barriers above to prevent bullets from flying over the berm.

They already reopened range two, and they hope to reopen the range by September.

"I think this will be one of the safest ranges in the country," Lockridge said.

Delligner disagrees, saying it will never be safe.

"They've already said that one time," Dellinger said. "I plan on having my day in court before they open it up."
