COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina House has passed a bill requiring colleges to post violations committed by fraternity and sorority members to publicize the groups' record before students join.
The House unanimously approved the "Tucker Hipps Transparency Act" on Wednesday. It is named for the Clemson University student found dead in Lake Hartwell in 2014 after an early-morning run with members of the fraternity he was pledging.
Hipps' parents were present for the vote.
Republican Rep. Bill Taylor says the bill will help keep students safe by allowing students and family members to go on college web sites and "size up" the organizations. He applauded Clemson in creating a "conduct reports" web page after Hipps' death.
Code of conduct violations that must be posted include alcohol, drugs, hazing and sexual assaults.
