Man dies in Wilkes County crash

NC State Highway Patrol is investigating the fatal crash on Saturday.

WILKES COUNTY, N.C. — A Wilkesboro man died at the scene of a car crash on NC 16 near Treadway Road the NC State Highway Patrol said.

 The crash happened in Wilkes County around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Shannon Lynn Austin was driving a 1999 Subaru Forester when, troopers said, he crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a 2011 Toyota Scion.

Austin, 46, died at the scene. 

He was not wearing a seatbelt, according to troopers.

 The driver of the Scion, 23-year-old Seth Eric Malone of Wilkesboro, was sent to a Charlotte hospital by medical helicopter. 

Malone is said to be in critical condition. 

The drivers were not believed to be impaired or speeding at the time of the crash, troopers said. 

NC 16 was partially closed in the area for about two hours during the on-scene investigation.
