Murder suspect returned to juvenile detention center after escaping, officials say

Zane Cesnik, 17, is accused of killing a 71-year-old man in Wake County in June 2023.

RICHMOND COUNTY, N.C. — An escaped inmate was returned to the detention center in Hoffman, North Carolina after a brief escape.

Officials say Zane Cesnik, 17, escaped from the Richmond Correctional Institution on Sunday. He was later found and returned to the jail.

Cesnik is charged with murder relating to the death of Jerry Hicks, 71, in June 2023, according to court records. Hicks was found dead at his home in Wake County.

He has since been held without bond. Cesnik's case was transferred to superior court from juvenile court due to the severity of this case, according to court records.

Cesnik's next court date is March 7 in Wake County.
