CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- One person was killed after a single-car crash in east Charlotte early Saturday morning.
According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, the crash happened on the the 2800 block of Central Avenue around 2:30 a.m. Police arrived at the scene and found a smart car had run off the road and struck a tree.
The driver has been identified as 27-year-old Brion Michael Reed.
Following a preliminary investigation, police say the car was traveling east on Central Avenue above the speed limit and entered a curve on the roadway. The car continued straight through the curve, went through opposing lanes of traffic and left the roadway. The car then struck a tree.
Police say alcohol and excessive speed are suspected as contributing factors in this crash.
