Rock Hill storm damage costs are 'somewhere around $5 million.' That number doesn't include damage to personal property

The York County Emergency Management says processing tree debris after the last storm will cost over $500,000.

ROCK HILL, S.C. — York County officials say they are facing a huge bill after storm damage clean-up in Rock Hill.

York County Emergency Management said the processing of tree debris just after the last storm is over $500,000 outside of the budget.

“In some form or another, somewhere around $5 million dollars," Chuck Haynes, the York County Emergency Management director, told WCNC Charlotte. "That’s damage to vehicles owned by the city or county, the expense in the response, the debris clean up."

The $5 million only applies to damages to “tax-funded” items like city and county cars and buildings. It doesn’t include damage to personal property.

“It may be months out [when] will have a final report on the cost. What we won’t have soon is the expense to the private citizen,” Haynes added.

Unfortunately, the massive cost still does not qualify the area for federal funding. So, tax dollars will cover what it can and everything else will have to come out of pocket.

“We do understand that there are people who are mentally and financially having a challenge with the weather,” Haynes said.

He says there are resources to help people who are still struggling.
