SC officials warn of 'flushable' wet wipes clogging city pumps

The City of Charleston sent divers into their sewer system Tuesday after noticing a clog at one of their treatment plants. The culprit: wet wipes.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charleston Water Services suffered a massive pump clog affecting the entire city Tuesday.

The culprit? So-called flushable wipes.

“You know wipes clog pipes, right?” Charleston Water tweeted

Charlotte Water officials confirm it’s also an issue here at home. People flushing wipes are quickly becoming the city’s largest cause of blockages, causing 40 clogs so far this year.

When that happens, sewage backs up and seeps out in homes, businesses, streets, even into local waterways, and then the EPA has to get involved.

It's an icky nightmare, all because people keep flushing wipes.

City water officials say they really want people to stop using these products altogether, but if you insist: toss them in the trash, not the toilet.
