Two Union County high school students found with guns on campus

Investigators say the firearms were found in the students' book bags. The weapons were not pointed at anyone and police don't believe the students threatened anyone.

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Firearms and ammunition were found at Forest Hills High School on Monday, leading to the arrest of two students.

Teachers were alerted that two students had firearms at the school, according to the Union County Sheriff's Office. A school resource officer detained both students and found a handgun in each of the students' bags.

Investigators say ammunition was also found in one of the book bags.

Officers do not believe that the students pointed, brandished, or threatened anyone with the firearms.

Both students were charged with possession of a weapon on a school campus. They will remain in custody at a juvenile detention facility.

"I would like to commend the students who came forward and immediately notified their teachers of their suspicions," Eddie Cathey, Union County Sheriff, said in a release. "Without timely reporting, these two offenders may have gone unchecked and could have caused irreparable harm to another student or themselves."

Cathey also advised parents to properly store their firearms and teach their children not to bring weapons to school.
