How to find relief from pesky fall allergies

Both ragweed and mold can be very difficult for those who suffer from allergies this time of year, leading to an itchy throat, teary red eyes and sneezing.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Because of long, hot summers, Carolinians look forward to this time of year for several months. From beautiful fall foliage to crisp, cool weather, there's plenty to get excited about during the fall.

But here's something you don't look forward to: fall allergies. Both ragweed and mold can be very difficult for those who suffer from allergies this time of year, leading to an itchy throat, teary red eyes and sneezing. Ragweed is common in ground soil and leaves, while mold spores are airborne and easily inhaled.

So how do you avoid those annoying triggers? Dr. Alekh Gupta with Atrium Health says there are a few ways to help yourself.

"When you're going outside, if you're spending a lot of time doing yard work or anything like that, come indoors and try to wash that pollen off your body," said Dr. Gupta. "Whether it's by changing your clothes, washing your hands, face, or showering."

Another option is to close your windows and use the air conditioning.

"As great as it feels with this nice fall weather, it's not a good idea to let that pollen come in through those methods," Dr. Gupta said.
