CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The stage is set for Tuesday’s midterm election, and more than two million people across the state have already taken advantage of early voting or have sent in absentee ballots.
In Mecklenburg County, Elections Director Michael Dickerson said the number of people early voting is strong.
“We’ll be over 200,000 that have shown up already for this midterm election,” said Dickerson.
Four years ago during the midterm, 91,000 people in Mecklenburg County voted early. This time the number is double that, causing Dickerson to wonder jokingly if he would have an early night on Tuesday.
Dickerson said he believes the reasons for the early turnout include an increase in interest for this election and the fact that more people have discovered the convenience of early voting. There is no statewide race this midterm and no Presidential race.
Weather could be a factor. Rain is predicted the Charlotte area. Dickerson said weather won’t keep people away who are strongly committed to one candidate or the other.
As for those not so sure, Dickerson said, “If you are on the fence and it's messy, they might say, ‘I’ll get to it tomorrow.’ Well, you can’t. We end at 7:30 tomorrow night and that’s it.”
The polls will be open until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
