Republican Tricia Cotham plans to seek reelection in newly-created district

Cotham, a longtime Democrat, made national news in April when she switched to the Republican Party in the middle of a legislative session.

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — State Rep. Tricia Cotham plans to seek reelection next year, according to Stephen Wiley, the caucus director for the House Republicans.

Cotham, a longtime Democrat, made national news in April when she switched to the Republican Party in the middle of a legislative session. Her decision tipped the scales of power in the legislature, giving Republicans the numbers they needed to be able to consistently override vetoes by Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper.

Cotham informed Wiley recently that she plans on running in the newly-created House District 105 in Mecklenburg County, Wiley told WRAL on Friday. Cotham didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.
