First Lady Dr. Jill Biden makes stop in Durham to talk research in women's health

Governor Roy Cooper will be joining the First Lady Wednesday.

DURHAM, N.C. — First Lady Dr. Jill Biden returns to North Carolina Wednesday as she makes a stop in Durham.

Biden has visited North Carolina twice this year, stopping by Forsyth Tech in January before heading to Charlotte in February.

Governor Roy Cooper joined her to discuss the historic actions and investments made by the Biden-Harris Administration to transform research and innovation in women's health.

With Governor Roy Cooper by her side, Dr. Biden spoke with local doctors in the Triangle about the work being done.

The President and First Lady launched the White House Initiative on Women's Health Research in November 2023 with a clear goal: to fundamentally change how our country approaches and funds research on women's health.

There's a big push for women's health research in our state.

First Lady Jill Biden talked about how the White House prioritizes and increases investments, fosters innovation and discovery in women's health, and so much more.

Dr. Biden also congratulated our state on its work as well.

"Women's health is having a big moment, and with President Biden's investment and women's health research, I know that the research triangle can lead the way. Not only will your university, businesses, and community benefit from it, but millions of women across North Carolina and the United States will, too," said Dr. Biden.

Dr. Mary Klotman, Dean of the Duke University School of Medicine, spoke about the importance of this work.

"Health and health care are not a one size fits all not only do women have distinct healthcare needs throughout their life, but the manifestation of many diseases varies depends on gender. Understanding that difference informs unique strategies for treatment and prevention," said Klotman.

Dr. Biden also focuses heavily on cancer education and prevention.

She launched the Biden Breast Health Initiative back in 1993.
