ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — A school bus was in an accident on US-52 near Quail Ridge Road in Albemarle, officials confirm. The school bus was on its side.
Officials confirmed a woman who was injured in last week's crash, 63-year-old Cynthia Thomas of Albemarle, died on Sunday.
There were 17 patients following the accident, Stanly County officials confirmed.
The bus was from Norwood Headstart school. There were three total vehicles involved in the crash, including the bus.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, a call came in at 2:42 p.m. Tuesday for personal injury involving a bus with kids on board.
Master Trooper Ned Moultrie said a 2012 Dodge truck was traveling east on Quail Ridge, came to an intersection and failed to stop for a stop sign. The truck went through the sign and collided with the daycare bus that was traveling North on US-52 and as a result, the bus overturned, coming to rest on the right shoulder.
The bus was occupied by 15 young children and two adults, one being the driver. as a result of the collision, several if not all of those on the bus were transported for what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.
The 2012 Dodge, towing a trailer, continued on and collided with another vehicle, a 2005 Toyota Scion. The woman in the Scion died after suffering serious injuries from that collision. Officials said that collision was similar to a sideswipe.
The operator of the Dodge remained on the scene with minor injuries during the investigation. That driver will be facing charges, which are pending.
