Plane crashes at RDU; UNC Health pilot, doctor taken to hospital

The airfield is closed for flight operations right now, which means no flights are coming in or out of RDU.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A UNC Health physician and pilot were taken to the hospital Wednesday after a small plane crashed at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU).

Broadcastify radio traffic provided some details: "Small plane down with two injuries; one entrapped... extrication underway."

According to Broadcastify, two people were on board the plane that crashed near gate 15. The crash happened on a secondary runway at RDU around 10:15 a.m.

UNC Health released a statement after the crash, noting that the plane was carrying one physician and a pilot.

"UNC Health has learned that one of its UNC Air Operations medical planes crashed this morning at RDU. The plane was carrying one physician and the pilot. Both have been taken to the hospital. We are working to gather more information."

Five flights that were supposed to land at RDU were diverted to Charlotte Douglas International Airport due to the crash, according to flight tracker website Flightradar24.
