10 charged in connection with DWI crash that killed Grimsley alum, including 3 UNC football players

Police reports show that multiple people were charged in connection to a DWI crash that killed Mary Rotunda.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A total of 10 people were charged in a DWI crash in Chapel Hill that killed 20-year-old UNC student Mary Elizabeth Rotunda of Greensboro, Chapel Hill police reports show.

On Jan. 21, Chapel Hill police were called to the intersection of Raleigh Road and West Barbee Chapel Road around 2:30 a.m.

Police said the driver lost control and drove into a wooded area, killing Rotunda, who was a passenger in the vehicle. 

Since then, the driver of the vehicle, 20-year-old Flemeeja Beatrice Brewer, also from Greensboro, has been indicted in Orange County after an investigation. She's been charged with: 

  • Felony Death by Vehicle
  • Felony Serious Injury by Vehicle
  • Involuntary Manslaughter
  • Driving While Impaired 
  • Speeding 
  • Failure to Maintain Lane Control
  • Driver After Consuming Under 21 Years Old 
  • Purchase/Possess/Consume Alcohol Under 21 Years Old
  • Fraudulent Use of ID to Commit Underage Offense 
  • Transport/Possess an Open Container of Alcoholic Beverage After Consuming Alcohol 
  • Careless and Reckless Driving
  • Exceeding a Posted Speed

Chapel Hill police said 21-year-old Brianna Tiera Pinson, who was a passenger in the vehicle, is charged with two counts of Aid and Abet Consumption of Alcohol by a Person Under 21 Years Old.

Police records show that a total of 10 people were charged in connection to the events that led up to this DWI crash, including three UNC football players. 

Investigators said UNC football player Zachary Rice, 20, was in a separate vehicle and was speeding. He's been charged with the following:

  • Driver After Consuming Under 21 Years Old
  • Consume/Possess Alcohol Under 21 Years Old
  • Exceeding a Posted Speed Limit

Two of Rice's teammates also face charges. 

UNC football player, Travis Shaw, 19, was charged with the following:

  • Underage possession/consumption of alcohol 
  • Five counts of aid/abet underage possession/consumption of alcohol
  • Outstanding order for arrest for failing to appear in Durham County for possession of marijuana
  • Underage possession of alcoholic beverages and unauthorized possession.

UNC football player, Malaki Hamrick, 19, was charged with underage possession/consumption of alcohol.

Through the course of the investigation, ALE special agents were able to determine that the underage occupants of the vehicle, including Rotunda, were served alcoholic beverages at two Franklin Street bars, Still Life and Might as Well.

While the investigation remains ongoing, the following individuals have been charged in connection with the incident:

  • Karissa Webb, 22, an employee of Still Life, was charged with three counts of sell/give alcohol to underage. 

  • Annelle McNair, 24, an employee of Still Life, was charged with five counts of sell/give alcohol to underage.

  • Malaki Hamrick, 19, was charged with underage possession/consumption of alcohol.

  • Travis Shaw, 19, was charged with underage possession/consumption of alcohol, five counts of aid/abet underage possession/consumption of alcohol, and an outstanding order for arrest for failing to appear in Durham County for possession of marijuana, underage possession of alcoholic beverages and unauthorized possession.

  • Cameren Spencer, 20, was charged with underage possession/consumption of alcohol and two counts of giving malt beverages or unfortified wine to anyone less than 21 years old.

  • Caden Spender, 22, was charged with six counts of aid/abet underage possession/consumption of alcohol.

  • Maliyah Pellum, 19, was charged with underage possession/consumption of alcohol and aid/abet underage possession/consumption of alcohol. 

At the conclusion of the overall investigation, ALE special agents will submit a report to the ABC Commission documenting the investigative findings. 

The ABC Commission may choose to sanction the locations through a fine, suspension, or revocation of the business’ ABC permits.
