Caught on camera: Burglars shatter window trying to get into Ballantyne home

The crime serves as an important reminder to protect your house ahead of spring break.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NBC Charlotte obtained dramatic video of burglars trying to get in a home in Ballantyne.

It showed the suspects as they crawled on the ground outside the home, peaking through the window, then shattering the glass.

This happened around 6:30 p.m. in the Ballantyne Country Club neighborhood last month.

The crime serves as an important reminder to protect your home ahead of spring break.

The case in Ballantyne involved several suspects. NBC Charlotte previously interviewed Tommy Carson who used to make a career out of breaking into homes and said he also used a team to break into homes.

"I would say I broke into over 100 homes, 100 plus," Carson told NBC Charlotte.

Carson said he’s been away from that life for 15 years and now offers insight on what burglars look for.

“Privacy fence, any type of trees or foliage around it, seclusion,” Carson previously told NBC Charlotte.

What about those security signs in the front yards? Carson said they can actually be magnets.

"For somebody who is on my level, that alarm sign was actually a helper,” Carson said. “Because we know what the alarm companies do."

Finally, Carson said the crooks will sometimes knock on the door first to see if anyone is home.

In the Ballantyne case, the suspects caused $1,000 in damage to the window but did not steal any items, according to the police report. No arrests were made.
