With the Panthers all but out of the playoff race, quarterback Cam Newton will miss the final two games of the regular season.
The news was first reported by NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport. NBC Charlotte's Kelsey Riggs was able to confirm the report that Newton would miss the last two games. Taylor Heinicke will start in Newton's place as the Panthers close out the season against Atlanta and New Orleans.
Newton was at Panthers practice Wednesday but did not participate.
On Tuesday, head coach Ron Rivera said no decision had been made on Newton's status. Newton's shoulder injury was apparent during Monday night's loss to New Orleans, as he was unable to pass downfield effectively or accurately find receivers.
