CHARLOTTE, NC -- Now that the Carolina Panthers have moved back to their facility in Charlotte for the remainder of the preseason, it's time to look at the BEST and WORST from the team's Training Camp.
BEST KEPT SECRET: Devin Funchess and Shaq Thompson
Funchess showed flashes of potential in his rookie campaign (5 touchdowns, 31 receptions) and should get some more open looks if Kelvin Benjamin attracts attention in his return.
Thompson is a versatile defender, who can cover the league's best slot receivers, and rush the passer. He's a born playmaker.
WORST KEPT SECRET: The Three Amigos
By now, all of the other 31 NFL teams are well aware of who the Panthers three rookie cornerbacks (James Bradberry, Zack Sanchez and Daryl Worley) are.
They will certainly try and expose the young secondary, which should feature Bradberry and Worley on the outside as first-year starters.
But from everything we saw in camp, consistently fooling those guys may not be so easy.
BEST HAT
No it wasn't one of Cam's hats. Instead let's go with Ron Rivera's United States Army hat. The Panthers do a great job of supporting all sorts of great causes while in Spartanburg, and hosting the troops is a fantastic gesture.
WORST HAT
During the torrential downpour at Fan Fest, Mike Tolbert sought cover under a trash can. On second thought I liked it even better than Cam's hats.
BEST MODE OF TRANSPORTATION
Wofford is a pretty small campus, but players still brought some toys to move around after a long day of practice. Thomas Davis' tricked out ATV was clearly the best. We'd expect nothing less from TD.
WORST MODE OF TRANSPORTATION
Cam and Kelvin were riding around on tricycle style scooters. Not a great look.
BEST QUOTE
When asked about learning an NFL playbook after three years of Aussie Rules Football, tight end Eric Wallace told me: "It's like learning ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs."
BEST MOMENT
After the torrential downpour cleared out of Uptown during Fan Fest, those who stuck around saw a beautiful sight -- a rainbow stretching across the skyline and right in view of Bank of America Stadium.
WORST MOMENT
The worst moment of training camp was Special Teams Coordinator Bruce DeHaven's departure from the team. DeHaven is headed home to Buffalo to continue treatment for prostate cancer. He hopes to be back by the home opener Sept. 18.
BEST CAM MOMENT
Always the entertainer, it was amazing to see Cam Newton guide tens of thousands at Bank of America Stadium in all sorts of variations of the wave during Fan Fest. Cam knows how much he means to the fanbase, and it often shows.
WORST CAM MOMENT
Cam Newton's GQ cover article included this quote about racism: "We're beyond that. As a nation." It was tone-deaf at the very least. Maybe poor word choice? Cam's words go a long way, which perhaps he doesn't understand quite yet.
