HIGH POINT, N.C. -- High Point University is reportedly expected to hire Tubby Smith as its new head men's basketball coach, according to ESPN.

Smith, an HPU alum, was fired this month after spending two seasons as head coach at the University of Memphis.

Smith played basketball at High Point from 1969 to 1973. The University inducted him into its Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016. Last year, High Point announced it will name the basketball court at its future arena after Smith.

Smith would replace former Panthers head coach Scott Cherry. Cherry and HPU athletics director Dan Hauser "mutually agreed" on a coaching change on March 7.

Cherry came to High Point in 2009 and left with a 146-34 record.
