Cyclist hit, killed in Lincoln County, troopers say

A Cherryville man died when his bicycle was hit by an SUV on North Carolina 182 in Lincoln County Wednesday night, state troopers said.

LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — A cyclist was hit and killed by a driver in Lincoln County on Wednesday night, state troopers said. 

The crash happened around 9 p.m. on North Carolina 182 near Sorrells Baxter Road, east of Lawndale. Timothy Mark Eaker, 59, was riding a bicycle in the eastbound lanes of the road when he was struck by a 2016 Jeep Cherokee, troopers said. Eaker was not wearing any reflective clothing and had no lights on his bike, according to Highway Patrol. He died at the scene.

The initial investigation doesn't indicate speed or impairment as factors in the crash and no charges are expected to be filed. The driver of the Jeep was not hurt during the incident. 

State troopers closed the road for several hours while investigating the collision. No further details were released.
