Police identify man killed in south Charlotte crash

The crash happened Tuesday morning along Rea Road near Ardrey Kell Road and Ballantyne Commons Parkway.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man was killed and a woman was injured in a crash in south Charlotte on Tuesday morning, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

Emergency crews responded to a crash on Rea Road at Southbrook Drive, which is between Ballantyne Commons Parkway and Ardrey Kell Road, around 7 a.m.

At the scene of the crash, responders found a Toyota Camry with damage on the driver's side and an Audi Q5 with damage to the front of the car.

The driver of the Toyota, identified as 95-year-old Robert Freedman, died at the scene. Medic confirmed that the driver of the Audi was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

According to the preliminary investigation, the driver of the Toyota was headed west on Southbrook Drive when he ran a stop sign and was struck by the Audi, which was headed north on Rea Road.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts and police say impairment does not seem to be a factor in the crash.

CMPD said the road was expected to be closed for at least a couple of hours while the crash was investigated and the scene was cleared. Drivers were urged to use Community House Road as an alternate route around the closure.
