Motorcyclist dead after crash with box truck in Iredell County

It happened around 1:40 a.m. along I-77 North.

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — A crash that unfolded on I-77 North in Iredell County early Thursday morning resulted in a motorcyclist's death.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol said it happened around 1:40 a.m. on the highway north of Statesville. The motorcyclist, identified as 35-year-old Dustin Kyle Pope of Statesville, reportedly didn't slow down quickly enough and crashed into a box truck.

Pope was ejected from the motorcycle, and troopers said he died at the scene. His coworker contacted WCNC Charlotte and told us Pope was a "very grateful and respectful" person who never gave up hope. 

"He would give you the shirt off his back," the coworker shared.

The driver of the box truck was not injured.

Troopers said the roadway was closed for about two hours for the on-scene investigation.
