Section of Lynx light rail shut down due to damage from Michael

The LYNX Blue Line will operate under modified service until further notice due to extensive damage to the overhead power system caused by Michael last week.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte was spared the worst of Tropical Storm Michael but the storm is leaving an impact on commuters who use the light rail system.

The LYNX Blue Line will operate under modified service until further notice due to extensive damage to the overhead power system caused by Michael last week. The storm knocked a tree down onto several lines near 12th Street last week.

As a result of the damage, CATS is using what they call a bus bridge to transport riders from 36th Street station in NoDa to Scaleybark Station in South End. Trains will operate as normal between UNCC and 36th Street Station and I-485/South Boulevard and New Bern Station. CATS is also working to organize express buses that will carry passengers to and from uptown in the busy morning and evening hours.

CATS says putting the bus bridge between Scaleybark and Sugar Creek will help them keep up with demand, as well as provide a better overall experience for customers during the interruption.

According to CATS, it will be at least a week until crews can repair the damage. On Monday, long lines formed at the New Bern Station as commuters tried to beat the crowds in and out of uptown. Many people understood the interruption but plenty of people were also frustrated by the delays.

"I'm supportive of the reason but it could've been communicated," said one man. "People could have made other arrangements so they don't have to deal with this."
