Charlotte airport breaks all-time passenger record in 2023

Over 53 million passengers went through Charlotte Douglas International Airport last year.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte Douglas International Airport broke its all-time passenger record in 2023, welcoming over 53 million passengers.

This record number of passengers in 2023 is a 12% increase from over 47 million passengers in 2022 and a 6.5% increase from the airport's previous record of over 50 million passengers in 2019. The 12% increase is Charlotte's highest year-to-year increase since 2010.

Airport officials attribute this growth to factors such as rapid economic development in the Charlotte area, remote work and overall changes in travel habits.

The airport expects 2024 to be another big year, with 10 new gates set to be added in the fall, progress on the fourth parallel runway, as well as the new Destination District that airport officials announced earlier this week.
