Charlotte area sees over 3 inches of rain with more expected by the weekend

The Charlotte area is starting to see a little sunshine, and we need it after more than 48 hours of clouds and rain.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Charlotte area is starting to see a little sunshine, and we need it after more than 48 hours of clouds and rain.

Rainfall totals across the region have been quite impressive following this week's storms. Charlotte Douglas International Airport officially reported 3.15 inches of rain since Monday morning.

Rainfall totals across the area varied from 1.8 inches to over 3 inches.

The rain was widespread from the mountains, foothills and Piedmont with many locations receiving more than two inches of water. The Hickory area received more than four inches, while Statesville and Boone were both over three inches.

Many lakes in the Charlotte area are above their target level after two days of steady rainfall.

Minor flooding has been reported along area rivers, lakes and streams Water levels of both Lake James and Lake Rhodhiss are above full pond and there has been some spillover reported at the dams. The rest of the lakes on the Catawba River are at their target levels but remain below full pond. The high water totals upstream will eventually flow downstream, meaning lake levels from Lake Hickory to Lake Wylie are expected to rise in the coming days.

The Carolinas could see up to another inch of rain by Saturday.

After a bit of sunshine Wednesday, a look at the First Warn futurecast points to even more rain for the area later Thursday and again on Friday. Rainfall totals won't be as impressive as this past system, but more rain on top of the already saturated ground can possibly lead to more flooding.
