Red Cross preparing for Hurricane Delta during the pandemic

The American Red Cross is actively preparing for the landfall of Hurricane Delta while upping efforts to social distance

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — So far this year the US has had 9 named storms make landfall and Hurricane Delta is set to be a record breaking 10th landfall to impact us this year. Delta is the 25th named storm so that would mean 40% of all storms have made landfall in U.S.

The American Red Cross and the National guard are actively preparing in Louisiana and Mississippi as Hurricane Delta gets closer to landfall. But disasters have a different look due to the pandemic.

So far this year the U.S. has been hit by 16 billion-dollar disasters.

"And all of that has been compounded due to the pandemic," tells Allison Taylor with the American Red Cross

The American Red Cross is positioned to help virtually and physically where Delta is set to make landfall.

"Our team including our incredible volunteers have been working tirelessly to provide comfort, support and hope," says Taylor.

But this season has been different. Aiding during a pandemic

Safety protocols are in place though.

Health screenings are at the entrances… checking people's temperatures before entering the shelter.

Masks are worn and enhanced cleaning is a priority

The biggest change though… is the amount of Space needed.

"If we have to have 3 times the space the we need to have 3 times the facilities," says Robbie Sofaly of the American Red Cross.

The Red Cross prioritizes relationships which has allowed them to expand their spaces and facilities to make sure everyone is social distancing during a time of a disaster.

14,000 people across 4 states stayed in American Red Cross emergency lodging on Wednesday (October 7th) alone. And those numbers are expected to go up drastically here over the weekend as the 4th named storm will make landfall in Louisiana.
