Dog with dogfighting injuries found dumped dead on side of Rock Hill road

PETA is offering at $5,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest. Advocates say it's just the latest dog found dumped in the area.

ROCK HILL, S.C. — The tragic discovery of a dead dog dumped on the side of Industrial Drive in Rock Hill has led to an investigation after the animal had injuries consistent with dogfighting, according to authorities.

"The dog was some type of pit bull mix, brown, with a black snout," said Kristin Rickman, a spokeswoman with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

The dog was found by a person who works nearby on July 2. It's just the latest in a string of animal abuse cases in York County.

"There have been, in the past, other dogs dumped in this area, some of them still alive, who also had injuries from dogfighting. So, it appears this is a dumping ground for the losing dogs or perhaps bait dogs," Rickman said.

She said police are investigating the case and are asking for any tips to help track down who dumped the dog.

PETA is also offering a $5,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest.

"Anyone who abuses an animal, especially dogfighters, are cowards," Rickman said.

In June, the York County Sheriff's Office announced an arrest after a large dogfighting bust.

Deputies arrested Anthonio Latoranodo Orr after seizing 42 pit bulls from his property. Authorities believe they were groomed for dogfighting.

Orr faces 75 counts, including animal abuse charges.

"Speaking generally, South Carolina doesn't have the best animal protection laws," Rickman said. "It's not in the top tier in the nation."

She is also urging pet owners everywhere to keep animals on a leash and to keep a close eye out for them. Rickman said dogfighters are known for stealing pets that could be used for bait during dog fight training.

"Your precious dog that you think is safe in your front yard can be snatched up by a dogfighter to be used as bait," Rickman said.

If you have any information about this case, you should call Rock Hill Police Department Detective Olson at 803-326-2420.
