GREENSBORO, N.C. — It's that time of year when we whisper to ourselves that we're sticking with our New Year's resolutions this year. But as much as we dream of sticking with our resolutions, let's be honest, it can be tricky. This is where body language comes in. Today, we're decoding your nonverbal cues to unlock the secrets of setting - and crushing - your New Year's goals.

Look for nonverbal signals that convey confidence and determination to see if someone is set on sticking to their goals. Firm gestures like a firm fist bump, open posture, and sustained eye contact all suggest they're serious about their intentions. Conversely, crossed arms, fidgeting, and frequent glancing around may indicate uncertainty or hesitation.

Here are clues that tell you if someone is about to throw in the towel on their resolution. For a fitness resolution, for example, watch for changes in posture when talking about working out. Slouching or avoiding eye contact might hint at waning motivation. Similarly, if someone suddenly starts checking their phone more often or fidgeting with their workout equipment, it could be a sign of disengagement.

When it comes to motivating others to stick with their resolution, it's all about mirroring. Subtly adopting postures and gestures similar to those of the person you're talking to can build rapport and create a sense of connection. Additionally, nodding, smiling, maintaining eye contact, fist-pumping, and pumping the air with your hand all show that you're cheering them on and have a genuine interest in their goals.
